5I Love You the Purplest  Jul 07, 2010
Being a mother, I can see why this book is so appealing to children and parents alike. The author has written a warm and beautiful story. She uses colors to answer an age old question, "who do you love the best?" The mother describes each child by using colors. The book celebrates a mother's love by including each child's uniqueness with a specific color. The illustrations are in perfect harmony with this warm and beautifully written book. The descriptive text places you right in the heart of the story. Many parents will love the diplomacy the mother demonstrates throughout her journey with her sons.

This is a great book for so many things. I have used it to inspire poetry writing. It has lots of figures of speech and the children enjoy the story about going fishing.

5For a mother of boys.  Jan 11, 2010
I was given this book when I had my second son. The way the mother expresses her love to each boy is beautifully unique. I especially love this book because I have four sons. There is so much in this world about a mother and her daughter. I'm glad I have a book to share with my boys that shows the unique relationship a mother has with her son. I always give this book as a baby gift to moms having boys.

4Good message... a little sappy in its execution, but good message  Nov 15, 2009
I'll admit it. I think this book is a little syrupy. Indeed, if I could give half stars I'd rate it at 3.5 instead of 4 stars. The mother is just too too patient with her ultra-competitive little ones. All they care about is being the best, and yet, she always manages to have the answer which avoids choosing favorites. (Frankly, she sets a standard that's hard to live up to.) Neither son is the best rower - one rows deep, the other rows fast. Neither is the best fisherman - one gets more fish, but the other got the smart fish. And so on.

And yet, despite the fact that I think it's just a tad bit on the sweet side for me, I do like it. This *is* a good way of talking to kids (even only children benefit from being specifically complimented on what they do instead of being generically told they're the "best"), and the message that there's value in everybody's actions (even if they aren't the "best") is a good one for kids to hear.

5Fishing for more than fish  Aug 03, 2009
I Love You the Purplest by Barbara M. Joosse is one of my all time favorite children's books. As a teacher and a mother of two very diverse boys, I always keep at least one copy of this book around. I Love You the Purplest is a story of two young boys (Julian and Max), their mother, and their evening fishing expedition. However, the boys are not only fishing for fish, they are fishing for their mother's love. The boys are continuously asking their mama questions such as, "Mama, who has the most worms?", "Mama, who's the best rower?", and "Mama, who do you love the best?" When their mama answers, she is very diplomatic with her responses and she explains how she loves them equally for their individual qualities.

I was first exposed to this book when I wanted my 2nd grade students to write a descriptive poem about their families. I read this story aloud to my students and then we discussed the very detailed, loving descriptions and beautiful metaphors that Barbara Joosse has included in the book. We also discussed how I relate this book to my own life with my boys and their extremely different personalities. I have also begun referring to this book when I teach comparative and superlative adjectives with my students. The illustrations by Mary Whyte are vivid, lively and catch the boys' distinct qualities. I think this book makes for an excellent bedtime story or class read aloud. I would recommend this book to any teacher or parent.
